Dental Practice Financial Benchmarks: How Does Your Practice Stack Up?

Overhead ratios, collections rates, and production per visit — the financial benchmarks that separate thriving dental practices from struggling ones.

Running a dental practice is running a business — but most dentists were trained to be clinicians, not financial managers. The result is that many practices leave significant money on the table, not through bad dentistry, but through financial blind spots that benchmarking can quickly reveal.

Overhead Ratio: The Most Watched Number

Overhead ratio — total expenses divided by collections — is the primary financial health metric for dental practices. Industry benchmarks suggest a healthy general practice should target overhead below 60%, with top-performing practices in the 55–58% range. Specialty practices often run lower. If your overhead is above 65%, you have a profitability problem that needs immediate attention.

Collections Rate

Your collections rate measures how much of your production you actually collect. A healthy practice should collect 98% or more of adjusted production (production minus contractual write-offs). If you're collecting less than 95%, you have a billing, insurance follow-up, or patient collections problem. Every percentage point below 98% is real money walking out the door.

Staff Cost as a Percentage of Collections

Staff costs — wages, payroll taxes, and benefits for all non-doctor employees — should typically run 22–27% of collections for a general practice. Above 30% is a warning sign. This metric helps you evaluate whether your team is appropriately sized for your production volume and whether compensation levels are sustainable.

Production Per Visit and Per Hour

Production per visit and production per clinical hour measure the revenue efficiency of your chair time. These metrics vary significantly by specialty and market, but tracking them over time reveals trends — are you becoming more or less productive? Are certain providers or days significantly below average? These questions lead to actionable improvements.
